Our department has a wide range of testing facilities which are mostly located in the Minto Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering. Some of these facilities are listed below:

  • 11 m x 27 m strong floor with a clear height of 11 m
  • Three +/- 1000 kN dynamic actuators
  • Four 6 DOF shake tables: the tables can be combined or work separately to accommodate different testing configurations
  • Advanced MTS hydraulic control and data acquisition systems with hybrid (numerical-experimental) simulation capabilities
  • Multi-camera high-speed digital image correlation system (under development)
  • A uniaxial shake table
  • +/- 1000 KN static actuators
  • Large reaction frames
  • New hydraulic/pump system

Additionally, Carleton University has close partnerships with other universities and research centers at the national and international levels. One example is the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE) which combines the research strengths and laboratory facilities of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. Another example is collaborative research projects conducted between Carleton and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). As Canada’s capital university, our students have unique access to the world-class testing facilities at NRC.
