Academic Prep: Winter Reset is a non-credit course for first-year students whose fall term didn’t go as well as they’d hoped.

The Centre for Initiatives in Education (CIE) developed Academic Prep because the difficult pandemic years continue to impact students in the form of skill gaps, mental health struggles and lack of confidence.

Students in the Winter Reset course will reflect on their first term, identify changes they can make, and adopt evidence-based learning skills and habits. Topics include study skills; notetaking; procrastination; problem solving (math and science); essay writing; and stress, mental health and resilience.

The course combines lectures with hands-on workshops where students discuss and practice the skills they’re learning.

The course runs from Friday, January 5 to Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The $175 course fee includes optional group and individual follow-up sessions throughout the winter 2024 term.

Carleton students who took Academic Prep in its pilot year last year completed more credits and earned higher grades than a matched sample of students who didn’t take the course.

Students register for Academic Prep (CIED 0999) through Carleton Central (log in through Carleton360), just like credit courses.

Please visit the CIE website for more details, and feel free to contact the CIE team by email if you have any questions.
