This page contains a list of all the publicly-accessible gender inclusive washrooms on campus.

Single-stall washrooms are a lockable room with a toilet and a sink (some also contain a urinal).
Multi-stall washrooms contain multiple toilets/urinals and sinks. Some of these inclusive washrooms have had their signage and designation changed from gendered to gender-inclusive, while others have had floor-to-ceiling dividers installed and other infrastructural changes made.
Accessible washrooms, also known as barrier-free washrooms, are lavatories with adequate space for a wheelchair to turn as well as a grab bar and power-operated doors.
Universal washrooms are enclosed spaces containing both a toilet and a sink. They have adequate turning space for a wheelchair, grab bars, and the space to accommodate an adult changing table.

Update on Inclusive Washrooms - March 2022

In the coming weeks, Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) will be converting some of the bathrooms in buildings across campus to be gender-inclusive. These changes are being made as part of a collaborative project between the Carleton Trans Advocacy Group (CTAG), the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities (EIC), and FMP.

These changes are being made after four years of planning, including pilot projects in St. Pat’s and Dunton Tower, and multi-year consultations with trans and nonbinary students, faculty, and staff at Carleton. In May 2019, FMP agreed to convert 50% of all on-campus washroom fixtures (toilets and urinals) to be gender inclusive. Now that work is moving forward.

Today, only 15% of on-campus washrooms fixtures are gender inclusive. Once these changes are made, 56% of on-campus washroom fixtures will be gender inclusive. The decisions on which bathrooms to convert were made through a combination of community consultation and the physical layout of bathrooms.

For this project, an inclusive washroom is defined as one that does not explicitly limit access based on gender. These kinds of facilities are also known as “all-gender” or “gender-neutral” washrooms. Gender-inclusive bathrooms are an important way to make Carleton a more welcoming and inclusive place and to meet to Carleton’s Human Rights obligations.
