Producing and Assembling Migrant Illegalization: Mexican Migrants in Toronto

This presentation draws from my book manuscript and examines the experience and production of migrant illegalization as it relates to Mexican migrants in Toronto. More specifically, it focuses on my analysis for one chapter, which examines the ten year process of implementing and repealing a visa requirement for Mexican nationals traveling to Canada. The rationale for the requirement was the high number of Mexican refugee claimants at the end of the 2000s. The requirement demonstrates a local, national, and transnational assemblage of migrant illegalization that was resisted by different stakeholders: Mexican migrants in Canada, Mexican policy makers and Canadian businesspersons.
