The Canadian youth delegation pose with the UN Youth Envoy.

This wasn’t a typical summer for Efrem Berhe and Sanda Ajzerle, students in the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management (BPAPM) program.

The pair travelled to Nairobi, Kenya in July as youth delegates for the 14th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development. The UNCTAD14 is intended to “promote the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy” and to translate the 2030 agenda for sustainable development into action.

“In the presence of many ministers, the UNCTAD Secretary General, and the the President of UNCTAD, the youth collectively presented their declaration that included proposed policies on accountability, employment and education: topics of immense concern to our generation,” said Sanda Ajzerle. “Efrem and I also met people from all around the world and we are already working on projects with many of these contacts.”

Ajzerle and Berhe were closely involved with the development of the youth declaration that will be included in the final Unctad report. The declaration called for “moving towards an inclusive and equitable global economic environment for trade and development.”
