GenAI in the Classroom: Use Cases
Below you’ll find some ideas about how you can use GenAI tools, such as Copilot, in different types of assignments to enhance student learning.
Supporting Writing and Communication
Use GenAI tools to improve clarity, structure and expression.
- Improving grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure: Students paste in a paragraph and prompt Copilot for grammar or clarity improvements. They compare original and revised versions and reflect in class.
- Revising resume and cover letters: Students prompt Copilot for specific revisions (e.g. stronger verbs, better organization), then compare and reflect on the changes.
- Creating writing samples for peer revision: Students iterate on tone, content and structure with Copilot, then share and discuss how and why they made changes.
Generating Ideas and Prompts
Use GenAI to spark creativity, structure thoughts or unblock progress.
- Brainstorming for assignments or group work: Students use Copilot to generate possible topics, outlines or directions for writing or project-based assignments.
- Writing prompt generation: Copilot generates creative or analytical writing prompts to help students get started or explore multiple directions.
- Debate and discussion counterpoints: Students input an argument and ask Copilot to generate counterarguments to strengthen critical thinking and persuasive writing.
Enhancing Language Learning
Support vocabulary, grammar and translation practice.
- Vocabulary in context: Students ask Copilot to translate a word and provide contextual uses, then write their own sentences and evaluate feedback.
- Grammar and sentence accuracy checks: Students generate sentences in their target language and prompt Copilot to check for correctness and fluency.
- Converse in a new language: Students have a conversation with Copilot using their target language to develop conversational skills, asking for occasional feedback.
Simulations and Practice
Leverage GenAI to role-play, simulate and prep for real-life communication scenarios.
- Interview skill-building: Students use Copilot for mock interview simulations or generate question sets for pair-based role play.
- Role-playing perspectives: Students simulate conversations with historical figures, stakeholders or experts to develop empathy and critical insight.
Studying, Reviewing and Self-Assessment
Use GenAI to support self-directed learning and peer feedback.
- Study assistant: Students ask clarifying questions, generate summaries or quiz themselves using Copilot and then verify with reliable sources.
- Essay structure feedback: Students prompt Copilot to analyze structure and coherence, then refine drafts before peer feedback.
