Ahmed Abdulla has been selected to serve on a committee that will investigate the opportunities and challenges facing the future of nuclear power in the United States. This study, “Laying the Foundation for New and Advanced Nuclear Reactors in the United States“, is being undertaken by the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems (BEES) of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
The study will be highly interdisciplinary, focusing not only on the technical requirements for developing a new generation of advanced reactors, but also on: economic, regulatory, and business issues facing nuclear power in a changing energy system; the viability of new reactor technologies in sectors other than electric power generation; and future workforce needs to sustain or expand nuclear science and technology.
The consensus study report is due to be published in summer 2022.
