- Aries (March 21-April 19)
-
Aries are bold and fiercely confident. You’re passionate about the things you enjoy, and people love to be around you because you’re always the life of the party! But sometimes that means you’re a bit impulsive, which can lead you to impulsively buy something you don’t need. If you’re worried about impulse spending, try bringing cash with you when you go shopping. That way you know exactly how much money you can spend before you physically run out.
Another option is to consider waiting 24 hours as a cool down period. This can help take some of the emotions out of an unplanned purchase, and you can always go back and get the item if you still want it the next day.
- Taurus (April 20-May 20)
-
As a Taurus, you’re pretty laid back and practical. Something bad happens? You’re unfazed, because you know that if you’re patient then it’ll all work out. However with this patience sometimes comes a bit of stubbornness. If your budget isn’t working then don’t feel like you need to force it to work; try making a small adjustment to your budget rather than trying to force yourself to stick to the first one you try.
- Gemini (May 21-June 20)
-
Do you ever look at someone and wonder “what is going on inside their head”? As a Gemini, it’s everything and everything! Your insatiable curiosity and affectionate nature means that you’re always learning new things, and this life-long love of learning is what people love about you. But this curiosity can pull you in a million different directions and make it difficult to remember every little thing. Try setting up an automatic transfer from your chequing to your savings account so that you can consistently contribute to building your savings without having to remember every month.
- Cancer (June 21-July 22)
-
Cancers wear their heart on their sleeves and protect what’s important to them. Your friends all come to you when they need support because you’re compassionate but will also give it to them straight. However even though outwardly you might put on a brave face for your friends, sometimes you can be a bit insecure and pessimistic about your decisions. An emergency fund can help you feel a bit more secure about your finances, and make you feel confident if an emergency happens. Check out our tips for starting an emergency fund as a student.
- Leo (July 23-August 22)
-
Get ready for the next star, because the Leo has entered the room! Your cheerful and theatrical personality makes you the center of attention no matter which room you walk into. Watch out though, because this can sometimes make budgeting a little tricky. It’s important for you to separate your wants versus your needs, otherwise it might be difficult for you to afford things that are necessary. Examples of needs include:
- Rent
- Tuition
- Food
- Internet
- Appropriate winter clothing
- Virgo (August 23-September 22)
-
When everyone else gives up, Virgos keep pushing forward. Your perseverance and analytical mind contribute to your hardworking personality. However sometimes you worry that you won’t have enough money, or you’re overly critical when you do spend money. Consider depositing money onto your campus card, that way you’ll know exactly how much money you’re spending. Your campus card isn’t restricted to only on-campus, there are many off-campus businesses that accept your card as well!
- Libra (September 23-October 22)
-
As a Libra, you have a strong sense of justice and fairness. You do great in groups because you can keep everyone on the right track and solve problems with a snap of your fingers. However, because you have the ability to see all sides, sometimes you’re a bit indecisive. You feel like you need to weigh all the options before making a move. This is a reminder that you don’t need to do a perfect budget on your first time! Try something out and then set a reminder to do a budget review; this way you get started without the burden of having to be perfect. Don’t know where to start? The Awards Office has a budget calculator to help you begin!
- Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
-
Scorpios are a bit mysterious. You’re passionate and brave, but you like to keep to yourself, and that’s ok! Just know that it’s alright to ask for help if you have questions about money. Even if talking to someone about money isn’t your thing, there are many books and podcasts about money that can help you learn more about your personal finances. In fact, we shared some of our favourite examples on our Twitter page this past month, so you have some ideas to get yourself started!
- Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
-
Generous. Idealistic. Great sense of humour. As a Sagittarius, you know how to lift everyone’s spirits and always leave your friends with a smile. You’re eager to explore everything because you know that you’ll make lifelong friends wherever you go. However this can lead you to be a bit impatient, because you want to see everything all at once. While it’s great to experience things in the present, it’s important that you don’t disregard long-term goals for short-term experiences. Try creating savings accounts with nicknames for your long-term goals, so you’ll always be reminded of why you’re saving.
- Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
-
If anyone in a friend group has their life together, it’s a Capricorn. You save every extra penny for that rainy day, you go the grocery store with a list and buy only those items, and when others buy things impulsively, you’re content with what you have. But just because you’re disciplined doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun! Consider checking out some of the clubs on campus that are available to join. There are clubs for a variety of different interests, and best of all many of them are free to join.
- Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
-
As an Aquarius, you’re fiercely independent. If nobody else wants to go traveling, you aren’t afraid to do it yourself. You also love to support the causes that are most important to you. When most people talk about changing the world, you actually go out and do it. But this generosity means that you don’t like to compromise. Make sure that you spend according to your values, which will allow you to spend more on the things that bring you the most joy.
- Pisces (February 19-March 20)
-
Naturally artistic and creative, you can find beauty in the everyday. You think in big ideas and enjoy having talks that challenge you to think outside the box. However just because you love the big things doesn’t mean you can neglect the small stuff. Your small everyday purchases can add up if you’re not careful. Tracking your spending can be an easy way to help notice all those small purchases. You can write down your purchases on a piece of paper, or try an app on your phone like Mint.
