Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Encouraging an inclusive environment is paramount for productivity, and in generating new perspectives and approaches to solving scientific questions. The BioSoft research centre will take an active leadership role in developing a collaborative environment that is inviting, safe, supportive, and inclusive.

Team members complete training on EDI principals and unconscious bias, professionalism, health and safety procedures, basic procedures routinely performed in the lab, ethical conduct of research, privacy, and safe laboratory practices. The team will proactively implement these inclusive practices on a day-to-day basis. For example, one strategy that the team members will implement when working with trainees is to use positively-framed instructor talk. This requires framing feedback in a constructive way and discussing ideas and solutions in a positive framework. This encourages an inclusive environment in which trainees can actively learn from potential challenges and develop new and creative solutions to different problems.

Faculty members will demonstrate by example to other team members through their language, attitude, and completion of EDI and workplace training. The team members will ensure that guidelines for safe and inclusive conduct are made available to all team members and that team members are aware of the process for managing conflicts and potential issues. Finally, the director and co-directors will act as a liaison for team members who need additional resources and accommodations, be it for family, religious or cultural reasons, ensuring that each team member has the best chance for succeeding within the research program.
