Canada and Europe: Converging or Diverging Responses to International and Domestic Challenges?

CAN-EU-FlagsThis major international conference featured leading scholars from across Canada and Europe who reflected on developments over the last decade and potential areas of convergence or divergence between Europe and Canada in the face of current international and domestic issues. Topics included: cooperation in dealing with international conflict; prospects for intensified trade and investment; and comparing Canadian and European responses to challenges such as environmental sustainability and climate change, migration and integration of immigrants, managing economic crisis, policies for inclusive growth and social inclusion, and issues of democratic legitimacy and governance.

A Lightning Policy Brief Series — a suite of policy briefs aiming to stimulate public thought and action — was produced in conjunction with this conference.

This event received support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and Carleton University’s Faculty of Public Affairs Research Month. We were pleased to host this event as part of the celebrations marking 40 years of the European Union’s diplomatic presence in Canada.
