Democratic Deficit and Policy Coordination in Multilevel Governance Systems
Canada, individual European countries, and the European Union face increasingly important challenges relating to democratic governance. These include: fashioning effective methods of democratic participation to address issues such as declining voter turnout; assessing factors that may reduce the political legitimacy of government decision-making processes and of political institutions; improving the accountability and responsiveness of governments and leaders to the public; and improving coordination within and effectiveness of multi-level governance structures. By sharing and comparing research results and by increasing familiarity with innovative governance approaches applied in Canada and the EU, this thematic group aims to elevate and enrich the level of public discourse about democracy, governance, and political participation, involving both policy circles and the public at large.

Déficit Démocratique et Coordination Politique dans les Systèmes de Gouvernance Multiniveaux
Le Canada, les pays européens individuels, et l’Union Européenne font face à des défis de plus en plus importants en termes de gouvernance démocratique. Parmi ceux-ci : établir des méthodes efficaces de participation démographique pour répondre aux enjeux comme la baisse de participation électorale, évaluer les facteurs qui peuvent réduire la légitimité politique du processus de décision gouvernemental, améliorer la responsabilité et la réceptivité des gouvernements et représentants au public, améliorer la coordination et l’efficacité des structures de gouvernance multiniveaux. En partageant et comparant les résultats de recherche et en rendant plus familières les approches de gouvernance appliquées au Canada et en Union Européenne, ce groupe thématique vise à élever et enrichir le niveau de discours public sur la démocratie, la gouvernance et la participation politique, engageant à la fois les cercles politiques et le public en général.
