Dr. Chris Herdman ( He/Him )
Principal Investigator, Carleton University
Assessment and Modeling of Human Performance in Complex Environments
Dr. Herdman leads interdisciplinary research that bridges fundamental and applied research on workload, situation awareness, simulation (driving and flight), virtual and augmented reality systems for training, aging and cognitive health. Over the past three years, Dr. Herdman has built a team focused on exploring the use of biometric and brain imaging techniques to measure cognitive functioning and workload in naturalistic settings. Dr. Herdman and his team have extensive experience in flight and driving simulation including evaluation and development of new platforms. Dr. Herdman is a Full Professor of Cognitive Science and Psychology, Scientific Director of the Carleton University Centre for Visualization and Simulation, and Head of the Advanced Cognitive Engineering (ACE) Lab. Dr. Herdman and his team have previously collaborated with Transport Canada on research using driving simulation to examine cognitive mechanisms associated with driver awareness. Previous work has examined the impact of driver-assist technologies on driver attention and distraction. The lab includes a range of high-fidelity simulators and state-of-the-art virtual reality devices. Dr. Herdman’s team includes systems and aerospace engineers who provide technical development and support.
