Overview
The WSIB is now accepting proposals for a systematic review: Occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (DEE) and lung and bladder cancers. The WSIB is seeking to fund one new award for a systematic review that specifically aims to a) evaluate the evidence on occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (DEE) and the development of primary site cancers of the lung (ICD-9 162, ICD-10 C33-34) and bladder (ICD-9 188, ICD-10 C67); b) examine exposure-response relationships by detailed exposure characteristics; c) identify industries and occupations with high risk of lung or bladder cancer development; and d) evaluate the potential for synergistic relationships between DEE and other risk factors for lung or bladder cancer.
Eligibility Criteria
The research team will require a minimum of three (3) team members including:
- At least one member with a doctorate in epidemiology
- At least one member who has formal training or industry hygiene (Masters Level or PhD)
- At least one member of the team must have demonstrated experience conducting systematic reviews including meta-analyses related to disease etiology
In addition, the ideal research team may also include:
- at least one member who is a MD with a specialization in occupational medicine or oncology.
Expert researchers affiliated with an eligible applicant organization:
- Publicly funded universities or colleges
- Public hospitals with a specialized research area
- Not-for-profit or registered charitable organizations with the capability and capacity to conduct research
- Canadian non-governmental organizations with the capability and capacity to conduct research
- Other organizations that have the capability and capacity to conduct research and are not privately owned and operated may also be eligible for a WSIB grant.
