Funding Value and Duration

Of the nominees put forward by Canadian universities, the NRC will choose three national nominees to compete for the title of National Champion and three international prizes worth CHF 1 million ($1.48M Cdn).

Overview

The Frontiers Planet Prize. Launched in 2022, this international prize aims to recognize and catalyze recent scientific breakthroughs with the potential to stabilize our planet’s ecosystem. The prize aims to emulate the passion and pride of the Olympic Games by unleashing the competitive spirit of researchers to get the world to sit up, listen, and act on profound planetary environmental threats.

The prize has a two-stage selection process with a national and an international component. Canadian universities are invited to submit up to three nominations for the initial national selection process, managed by the National Research Council. Information on last year’s international and national champions is available here.

Eligibility Criteria

• The lead scientist is the individual selected by the nominating institution who best represents the team of the published article. If the International Champion title is awarded, the lead scientist will be responsible for managing the prize money to drive the research project forward

• The article submitted must have been accepted within the 2 years prior to the launch of the competition.

• Research across all disciplines is welcome, on the condition that it is focused on the Foundation’s Planetary Boundaries and offers new insights that help to reduce the destabilization of the Earth system.

• The Frontiers Planet Prize will be awarded to the best research published in established peer-reviewed scientific journals, with robust peer review and transparent publication procedures
