Capstone Projects

All projects officially start at the beginning of the academic year in September.

However, if the student(s) arrange an early agreement with their potential supervisors, in consultation with the Capstone supervisors, they can start their project early during the summer.

This arrangement gives students more time to work on the projects, and gives an early start to dedicate more time on the project. However, the project will still finish in Winter term along with the other projects (i.e., a two term Capstone project plus any early start in the summer). Students should carefully browse through the available projects for the current academic year to find their preferences based on their interest and background. Due to sabbaticals and other types of academic work load adjustments, several professors do not offer 4th-year projects in any one academic year and only the ones listed here are the project offerings.

Students may wish to contact professors directly to get more details on their proposed projects before finalizing their decision. Sometimes a student or a group of students approach a professor and convince him or her that they have the motivation and the necessary background to undertake a certain project. They still need to file the application form and indicate this mutual interest. In this case, the individual or the group may start acquiring the background material for the project during the summer.

Project Selection Process

Step 1 – Project Exploration: Talk to various faculty members related to the projects they are offering to get more details. While this is encouraged, its an optional step.

Step 2 – Project Application: All students are next expected to fill the online application form to indicate their project preferences to be considered for project assignments. The coordinator will attempt to assign students to their chosen projects. The priority is given to the students who have come to an agreement with a professor to undertake a project based on mutual interests. The priority is then given to students based on their GPA and mutually expressed interests in partnership.

Project Application Deadline: June, 1, 2025

Step 3 – Brightspace Enrolment: All students registering in ELEC4907/ELEC4908/SREE4907 and ECOR 4907 with DoE faculty supervisors) and who completed the application form will be enrolled on the Brightspace page (DoE Final Year Engineering Project).  This enrolment is automatically completed soon after the project application form is submitted.

Step 4 – Project Allocation: All applications will be reviewed and the students will be directly enrolled in project specific groups and workspace on Brightspace. A common announcement will be sent on Brightspace once this allocation is completed after application review. Only the students enrolled in Brightspace will be notified.

Step 5 – Course Registration: Confirm registration to either ELEC4907/ELEC4908/SREE4907 or ECOR4907.

Step 6 – Access Project Resources on Brightspace

Project Fundings

Funding avenue is available to students through the Department of Electronics (DoE) with a capped budget. A funding request to the Department of Electronics (details available on the course Brightspace page later during the term) must be made with detailed budget information. Alternative avenues are the CUESEF and KEFC fundings internal to Carleton.
