The Department of English is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the biggest cash award for English-language fiction in Canada. With assistance from the Giller Foundation, our Winter 2025 section of ENGL 4135 will provide students with an opportunity to talk literary prizes with the judges for the 2024 prize and to welcome the prizewinning author to class. The course, taught by Prof. Jody Mason, will examine the novels in the 2024 Scotiabank Giller shortlist alongside broader scholarship on the prize as a crucial feature of contemporary trade publishing, tracing the increasing ubiquity of the prize in the era of conglomerate publishing that began to emerge after 1965.
