Apply for a Winter Bursary: January deadlines

For students who started ESP in September

ESP is happy to announce that we have five winter bursaries available. These bursaries were established to help support students with workshop fees and educational expenses.

  • What: A bursary award of $1000 (bursary are grants awarded based on financial need – unlike loans, they don’t need to be repaid).
  • When: Deadline extended to January 21 at midnight
  • Who: This will be awarded to 5 current ESP students.  Priority will be given to students with strong attendance and academic performance, and who have not received a Carleton University bursary this academic year.

For students who started ESP in January

New January students should use the General Bursary Application in Carleton Central.

  • What: A bursary award is a grant awarded based on financial need – unlike loans, they don’t need to be repaid.

For all students

OPIRG bursaries: Due January 26

OPIRG Carleton is the social justice resource center on campus offers student and community bursaries and grants to support student research and accessibility needs. This year they are offering the following grants and bursaries: opirgcarleton.org/funding/bursaries.

Food assistance

The Students Association (CUSA) operates a food hamper service. Fill out a request for food by clicking the Food Services link here: www.cusaonline.ca/usc/.

Meet with an Academic Coach for a Happy New Year

Our ESP Academic Coaches are excited to meet with you starting this term. Start the year off right!

  • ESP students can meet with coaches once every week for one hour.
  • Coaches can:
    • help you get organized for the term ahead
    • work on reading and study strategies
    • strengthen your writing
    • help you beat procrastination and test anxiety
    • … and so much more!

Please help us. If you need to cancel your appointment, please notify us at least 12 hours in advance by emailing academic.coaching@carleton.ca or using the link in your text/email notice.

ESP game nights & movie nights

Join ESP mentors and fellow students each Thursday at one of this term’s social activities. Feel free to bring friends or come on your own. Join the Discord to see movie options and for updates.

  • Most Thursdays are Game nights held from 5:30pm-7pm in the ESP Student Lounge 1521 Dunton Tower (15th floor)
  • The last Thursday (Jan 25, Feb 29, Mar 28) of each month will be a Movie night, starting at 5:30 pm in 234 Tory Building.
  • Game nights will not be run on the days that movie nights are being held.

Looking for work? Virtual career fair January 24

If you’re looking for part-time or summer work, there are two career fairs coming up that you should check out:

Carleton’s Winter Career Fair 

  • Who: Organized by Carleton’s career services
  • What: Virtual Winter Career Fair for current students and alumni. Explore full-time, part-time, summer, and co-op opportunities and browse current job openings.
  • When: Wednesday, January 24 from 10:00-4:00
  • Register: at the Career services site

Reminder: Many employers will be accepting resumes at the fairs! If you need assistance with your resume prior to the fair, please book a virtual resume review appointment with Career Services by emailing career@carleton.ca. You can also attend a virtual Prepare for the Fair event on January 18 or January 19 to have your resume reviewed or their LinkedIn and Online presence session (register on the mySuccess Co-op and Careers Workshops and Events Calendar).

Free student tax clinic

Worried about filing your taxes this year? Don’t be! The Sprott Tax Students’ Association (STSA) is here to help with their annual tax clinic.

To file your taxes with the tax clinic, you must first fill out the tax clinic’s client intake form.

  • Once you fill out this form, STSAs’ tax clinic team will review it to determine the complexity of your tax return and whether it is within the scope of the tax clinic.
  • You will receive an email indicating whether your tax return is simple enough to be filed with the tax clinic and you will then be given a link to book an appointment.
  • Note: all appointments at the tax clinic will be held between March 25th and April 2nd, 2024. For more information, please visit the tax clinic’s webpage.

Note: All tax returns are filed at no cost. The tax clinic is run as a free community service. For any questions, please reach out to director.custsa@gmail.com.

Curious about summer courses? Course offerings are now available to view in the Public Class Schedule. ESP Student Registration starts on March 25 and early summer term courses begin May 2.

Applying to a degree

To apply for a program, come in and meet with an Academic Advisor. Don’t use OUAC, as a Carleton student, you can apply for free.

Deadlines:

  • March 1st: Architecture, Engineering, Computer Science, Humanities, Industrial Design, Information Technology (Interactive Multimedia and Design), Journalism, Music and Social Work.
  • June 1st: This is the general deadline for all remaining programs, including all in the Bachelor of Arts (such as Criminology, English, Psychology, Sociology and so on), Business, Economics, Global and International Studies, Cognitive Science, Science, etc.

Considering degree options? Visit the Arts & Social Sciences fair on Feb 10

The Arts and Social Sciences Fair brings students – current and future – and professors together at our downtown Arts, Performance and Learning Centre, the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, to celebrate what makes the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences a great place to study.

  • Attendees can pick-and-choose from panels, interactives, and informational booths to discover all the Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University has to offer.

Withdrawal deadline: January 31

The financial withdrawal deadline is January 31st. You can withdraw from courses up until March 15, but January 31st is the last date to withdraw and receive a refund of winter term fees.

You need to request a withdrawal from an academic advisor either by email: esp.advising@carleton.ca or by booking an appointment (link below).
