Anthropology | Carleton’s Tunnel Murals through Visual Ethnography | Carleton’s tunnels are one of the defining features of the campus, a vital piece of campus infrastructure in regard to mobility, and a space of social-cultural engagement with important study and social hubs; the tunnels are filled with life, movement, and tunnel carts. Students have marked their historical presence on campus through hundreds of tunnel murals, transforming the tunnels into a space for lasting expression of social, cultural, and political identities of Carleton students and other community members over time. You're invited to see how anthropologists use ‘visual ethnography’ to document and understand cultural histories and learn about Carleton’s Ethnography Lab’s activity to document and share this important cultural history of Carleton. There will also be an activity to practice visual ethnography! |
Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies and Linguistics | All Things SLaLS: Carleton's School of Linguistics and Language Studies | Have you ever seen what your name looks like in a spectrogram? Professors from the School of Linguistics and Language Studies will record you saying your name and show you how it appears in a program called Praat, which many linguists use for acoustic analysis of speech. They will also demonstrate discourse analytic techniques by showcasing visualization of word frequencies using programs like WordWanderer, LancsBox, and SketchEngine. Look at datasets of stories and try to guess which words are used most frequently and which words tend to stick together (“collocate”). Learn how discourse analysis can help researchers overcome natural bias and preconceived notions about language and text. Modern Languages Instructors will be on hand to discuss the similarities and differences between the languages we teach, featuring an interactive quiz with prizes. |

French | Explore beautiful Québec City and get credit for it | Professors will be available to discuss the French program and one of its standout courses: a fourth-year seminar taking place each spring in Québec City. Through a combination of asynchronous online and on-location experiential learning activities, this course is an exploration of the literary, cultural, and historical significance of Québec’s provincial capital region, home to two Indigenous reserves of the Huron-Wendat Nation. Students will be able to view photos, videos, and testimonials of past participants. |
Geography, Geomatics, and Environmental Studies | Geography Matters! | As an academic discipline Geography is unique in that it brings together both the natural and the human sciences. History | Hands-on History | The History program at Carleton prides itself on offering hands-on History. Whether having students engaging in field work or completing a practicum at Library and Archives Canada, working with records from the First World War or handling medieval manuscripts, putting together a podcast, or building a history-informed game, History asks students to engage with tangible sources from the past to inform their present learning. Our display will highlight two current initiatives – teaching about historical sources in the Book Arts Lab and the growing field of Historical Games Studies. At our booth, visitors can handprint a bookmark or play a game from the early days of gaming. |

You will have a chance to spin the 'Wheel of Where Are They Now?' to learn about the jobs and adventures of students who graduated from Women's and Gender Studies, Sexuality Studies, Critical Race Studies, or Disability Studies. You can also throw to try and burst the balloons of misogyny and win candy and other swag. Finally, you can demonstrate your Feminist prowess by answering questions about Feminism at Carleton and in our larger communities. Every correct answer will also lead to candy and other prizes. |
