Positions for M.Sc. and Ph.D. Students are Available!
Dr. Yaxi Hu’s Food Analytical Chemistry and Technology (FACT) Lab in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at Carleton University is actively recruiting talented graduate students to join for the next phase of their academic learning.
Her research program aims to develop and apply advanced analytical chemistry technologies to solve challenging and emerging issues faced by the agri-food industry. Specifically, her research has been focusing on the advancement of novel and reliable chemo- and bio-sensor- and instrument-based analyses for food chemical and biological hazards as well as food adulterants; development and implementation of point of need microfluidic “lab-on-a-chip” devices to achieve real-time, cost-effective and high-throughput analysis; and development and application of mass spectroscopic based metabolomics and bioinformatics to systematically investigate food microorganisms and food toxicology. Successful applicants will work in an open-minded, highly motivated and interdisciplinary team; be provided with opportunities to collaborate with the food industry and researchers in the government laboratories including Health Canada, National Research Council and Canadian Food Inspection Agency; and present their research achievements in international conferences.
Eligibility of applicants:
- Applicants should have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. Degree in Food Science, Analytical Chemistry, Biology, or other closely related fields;
- Be highly motivated, open-minded, and passionate in interdisciplinary research;
- Be self-disciplined and adaptive to fast-paced learning and research environment;
- Have good teamwork skills and communication skills (both written and verbal in English);
- Previous benchwork experience in food analysis, spectroscopy, microfluidic, metabolomics, toxicology, machine learning, and/or bioinformatics is preferred but not mandatory;
- Minimum requirement for GPA and language tests for international students can be found in the department website;
- International students are encouraged to apply for external funding.
To apply, please contact Dr. Yaxi Hu at yaxihu@cunet.carleton.ca with a cover letter, CV, unofficial transcript and names and contact information of at least two references.
