What is it?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a federal tax of 5% assessed on the sale of goods or the provision of services in all provinces.  In many of these provinces, including Ontario, it is blended with a provincial tax rate to result in a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

Why is it important?

When providing a good or service to an individual or organization external to the University, it is important to be aware of whether taxes should be charged, how to collect and report on them, what records must be retained for audit purposes, and whether it is possible to claim an input tax credit.

Our primary roles of providing service in instruction and research are not taxable, however additional services (e.g. conferences, book sales) may be subject to GST.
