What is it?

A Student Stipend is a fixed payment made to an individual registered in a graduate program for work related to their field of study during a period of training.

Why is it important?

There are no deductions at the time of payment and the student will receive a T4A for the amount received by them during the calendar year. The classification on the T4A will show as research grant income and eligible expenses related to the research may be claimed when reporting to the Canada Revenue Agency.

Where do I find more information?

Search the Canada Revenue Agency’s website for rules regarding grant income and income tax legislation.
