FASS Excellence in Teaching Awards - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

FASS Excellence in Teaching Awards(Formerly the FASS Teaching Innovation Award)OverviewFASS Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETAs) recognize faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching over a period that includes at least the most recent 3 years. Up to two awards, with a maximum value of $4000 per award, will be supported each year. Please note that these awards are not supported by an endowment or a base budget, and thus depend on the Office of the Dean having discretionary funds available in any given year.Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a regular faculty appointment (i.e. Instructors through to Full Professors) AND at least 50% of their appointment must be in FASS.

Beginning in 2018, faculty members are eligible to receive an ETA once per academic rank.

Eligible faculty can submit applications for the Research Excellence, Teaching Development, Excellence in Teaching and Team Research Award in the same year but can hold only one of these Awards per cycle.

ApplicationsApplications must include:

A summary statement (maximum of 5 pages) which may include:

teaching philosophy,
development of new academic programs and courses,
curricular innovations,
other relevant teaching achievements

A brief statement (maximum of 1 page) of how your teaching has contributed to the advancement of academic programs in FASS at Carleton University.

Teaching evaluation reports produced by OIRP of all courses of all courses taught over the previous 3 to 5 years and a list of graduate students supervised (if applicable).

A current curriculum vitae must be appended to the application.Student testimonials are not to be included in the application package.All parts of the application must be contained in a single file, starting with the application, followed by the teaching evaluation reports and the applicant’s CV. The application package must be emailed to fass.awards@carleton.ca by Tuesday, January 30th, 2025.Applications will be adjudicated by the Executive of the Faculty Board, based on criteria such as:

Candidate’s demonstrated teaching record, and/or

Contribution of teaching to research in FASS, and/or

Contribution of teaching to the advancement of programs, and/or

Contribution to the advancement of pedagogy in FASS.

Conditions of the AwardAward winners will be recognized at the FASS annual vin d’honneur celebration and the Award must be applied in the next academic year.
