The killing of George Floyd in the United States is a stark reminder that the scourge of racism is still part of everyday life. We must confront racism in whatever form it manifests itself, whenever and wherever we see it.
As educators, we in the Faculty of Public Affairs have a responsibility to be at the forefront of efforts to fight racism in all its forms and manifestations. We must act to ensure that the future leaders who go through our programs of study know that racism has no place at Carleton, in our communities, and our societies.
Fighting racism is a local, national, and global imperative – and a reflection of our mission in the Faculty of Public Affairs to help build better societies and better democracy.
This year, a committee of FPA faculty members and staff developed Raising Our Sights: Priorities and Directions for the Faculty of Public Affairs. It includes a number of recommendations for Faculty-level actions for advancing diversity and inclusion. Together, we must embrace the task of turning these words into actions.
Thank you for joining in our effort to eliminate racism on campus and in our society, and to ensure that all of our students go into a world where they are treated fairly and respectfully.
