CUROP FAQ
As part of the Carleton University Research Opportunity Program (CUROP), the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs is hosting summer undergraduate research internships. Under the supervision of a faculty member, each student participant will design their research project and complete it over the summer.
What is the deadline to submit an application for the 2024 CUROP?
Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 11:59 PM (EST). Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
I’m graduating from Carleton in June 2024. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, students who will be graduating in June 2024 are eligible to apply.
Do I need a specific GPA to apply for a CUROP?
Yes, students need to have a 9.0 or higher GPA to be eligible. I received a CUROP in the past.
Can I apply in the 2024 competition?
No, students who have had a CUROP previously are not eligible to apply. I am a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences student. Can I apply for a CUROP? Yes, but you need to apply through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
I am currently a graduate student at Carleton. Can I apply for a CUROP?
No, graduate students are not eligible for the CUROP. It is an undergraduate award.
Can I work full-time and do a CUROP project?
No, the award requires that you will work on your project on a full-time or near full-time basis from May 1, 2024 to August 31, 2024.
Can I work on a CUROP and not be in Ottawa?
Yes, you can pursue a CUROP and not be present in Ottawa. You will have to make arrangements to be in contact with your supervisor.
What should I include in my two-page research project description, which is included in my application?
Your description should clearly identify a project, briefly sketch out a methodology (how you will do it), and what is the expected output. You should also outline what skills you anticipate developing and what you expect to learn by doing this project.
What are some examples of CUROP outputs?
The outputs can vary from project to project. Some examples of outputs include a research essay; a policy report detailing findings and recommendations; and an empirical research portion of an Honours Research Essay.
What are the other requirements?
All CUROP students will have to submit a two-page abstract of the research project and its results by the end of the summer. On the recommendation of their supervisor, students who complete this research will be invited to participate in an FPA CUROP showcase event in the Fall.
How do I find a supervisor?
You may wish to approach your current or past professors if they have expertise in your research field. Your professors may also be useful in identifying other suitable supervisors. The Chair/Director of your unit and/or the graduate administrator may also be helpful.
What should the supervisor write in a letter of support?
Faculty members are the best to determine this when you ask. In general, they need to indicate a willingness and availability to supervise your work over the summer.
Can my CUROP be part of my supervisor’s own research project? No, the CUROP is a project initiated by undergraduate students and funded through ODFPA. It is not designed to supplement a faculty member’s research plan.
Can a part-time instructor be a CUROP supervisor?
No. Supervisors must be full-time faculty members.
Does my supervisor have to be in the Faculty of Public Affairs?
No. FPA undergraduate students may work with supervisors in other faculties.
