The Alt-Ac Launchpad

October 31, 2023 at 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Location:Online
Audience:Current Students

Description:

The transition from graduate school to working outside of academia can be a difficult one. It’s not easy to establish new contacts and adapt to new ways of thinking within unfamiliar fields. For this reason, graduate students should consider the wide range of “alternative academic” or non-faculty career opportunities within academia. This workshop will provide an overview of alt-ac career options with the goal of making you aware of the opportunities around you.

Learning outcomes:

(1) Understand the administrative and support structures within the university

(2) Learn about the duties involved in various types of alt-ac work

(3) Determine how to best present your qualifications and experience when looking for alt-ac work

Workshop leader(s):

David Lafferty

All graduate students are welcome. If you are a TA, this session counts toward voluntary paid training hours, provided that you are working as a TA in the term when the training takes place.

Competencies:

Career Management
