Hows and Whys of Networking

Description:

We all know that networking is considered an important part of pursuing professional goals, but many of us have trouble networking effectively. Further, we sometimes fail to appreciate exactly why networking is important, and how it can benefit us even when we are not looking for a job. This workshop will look at the hows and whys of two forms of networking: “traditional” networking and the new forms of networking made possible by social media.

Learning outcomes:

(1) Understand the basic principles of “traditional” networking, including interpersonal communication in a professional context

(2) Recognize the networking rituals of academia, including conferences

(3) Cultivate an understanding of networking as an ongoing process that can provide new paths for collaboration and innovation—not just job opportunities

(4) Gain insights from the work of Brian Uzzi into the importance of maintaining a broad and varied network that is not exclusively professional, and how to recognize “superconnectors”

All graduate students are welcome. If you are a TA, this session counts toward voluntary paid training hours, provided that you are working as a TA in the term when the training takes place.
