Research highlights:
- A simple hydraulic valve is used to perform active heave compensation.
- A proposed model predictive control algorithm is simulated & experimentally verified.
- The proposed control algorithm out performed a traditional controller.
- Model accuracy was not a critical component of the control algorithm.
- The final controller decoupled up to 99.6% of the transmitted motion.
