Science Café – Can Humans Hibernate? Maybe.
As part of Carleton University’s Science Café series, Jeff Smith of the Department of Chemistry will present Can Humans Hibernate? Maybe….
When: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Sunnyside Branch of the Ottawa Public Library, 1049 Bank Street, Ottawa
Info: This event is free and open to the public.
Media are invited to attend the event.
The concept of putting humans into a state of hibernation or suspended animation is explored in many science fiction books and movies, but is it realistic? The recent discovery that some primates hibernate strongly suggests that humans may also have the biochemical machinery to hibernate but that it goes unused for unknown reasons.
Smith has been studying how cell membranes adapt to low temperatures in cold-tolerant animals and has gained some interesting insights to share at this Science Café. Could a better understanding of what happens on a cellular level during hibernation enable humans to hibernate? Maybe.
The Science Café series is organized by the Faculty of Science at Carleton University to discuss relevant issues facing our society and how science can help solve real-world problems. Meet some of our award-winning faculty members and graduate students as they share their excitement about science with the community. For more information, visit: Science.carleton.ca/science-cafe
