Dick’s research looks at the relationship between religion, media and public policy. She is currently working on a project on Christian liberalism, a concept she developed in order to understand the historical dominance of Christianity in different liberal democratic contexts. Christian liberalism can be seen in political and legal discourses, which have allowed various iterations of Christianity to be rendered invisible cultural defaults while the expressions of minority groups are rendered exceptional or requiring liberal toleration. Case studies include attempts by politicians in Quebec to ban full-face coverings from public-service sectors.

Karim is the director of the Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam. He has expertise in cultural theory, diaspora, intercultural engagement, post-colonial theory and transnational communication. Before joining academia, he worked as a senior researcher and senior policy analyst in the Department of Canadian Heritage. Karim serves on the boards of the Canadian Journal of Communication and Global Media Journal – Canadian Edition. Karim’s co-edited books include Re-Imagining the Other: Culture, Media, and Western-Muslim Intersections and Engaging the Other: Public Policy and Western-Muslim Intersections.

Adrian’s research focuses on the question of rights of minorities in religiously, ethnically and culturally diverse societies. She examines how states integrate or accommodate culturally distinct peoples while maintaining a healthy balance between international and national rights and respect for national values. Most recently, she has looked at these questions in light of the debate around religious symbols in public schools in France. Her forthcoming book Risking Religious Freedom: France, the Veil and the Right to Act on Faith argues that France, and Europe more generally, are heading down a dangerous path in their reluctance to live up to the spirit of international human rights conventions.
