Carleton University Mourns the Passing of Paul Dewar

Paul Dewar, Carleton alumnus, former teacher and Ottawa politician, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the age of 56. A husband and father, Dewar graduated from Carleton in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Dewar served as the MP for Ottawa Centre for the New Democratic Party from 2006 until 2015.

Dewar was known as a tireless advocate for social justice. In his role as the Official Opposition’s critic on Foreign Affairs, Dewar called on Canada to address human rights abuses and crimes throughout the world, as well as doing more to help refugees.

Dewar was dedicated to the Ottawa community and championed local causes that included housing, the environment and transportation issues.

After the public confirmation of his cancer diagnosis, Dewar founded Youth Action Now – an organization committed to engaging youth leaders to create positive change in their communities.

Prior to his passing, Dewar wrote a letter that his family shared following his death. It is available online.
