Carleton’s Chemistry Magic Show to Celebrate the Year of the Periodic Table
Carleton’s Office for Chemistry Outreach will host a special indoor Chemistry Magic Show in honour of the International Year of the Periodic Table. Celebrating the periodic table’s 150th anniversary, the show will feature new experiments and explore how chemistry and the elements make up our world.
Chemistry Magic Show
When: Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, shows begin at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
Where: Room 2200, Second Floor, Richcraft Hall, Carleton
Info: Seating is limited, tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on ticketing, please see the event website. If the auditorium is full, the show will be livestreamed in an overflow room for attendees to watch on large screens. A campus map is available online.
Under the theme of the periodic table of elements, the magic show will take a look at the inner workings of fireworks, spontaneous combustions and things that glow in the dark.
Scientists will explain the elements, their use and where they can be found on Earth.
Hands-on Activities
When: Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, hands-on activities will run from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Where: The Super Lab, Room 204, Steacie Building, Carleton
Guests will have the opportunity to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, encounter interesting smells and see some of the demonstrations up close.
Admission to the event is by donation of non-perishable food items and cash for the Ottawa Food Bank. All cash donations will be provided to the Ottawa Food Bank’s programs that support Ottawa-area schools.
The Chemistry Magic Show is held in partnership with Science Rendezvous and Science Odyssey.
