Carleton to Host Expert Panel on the Importance of Housing in the Health of a City

February 20, 2020

Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is hosting a series of expert panels to explore the many factors – from climate and nature to youth and art – that make a healthy city in 2020. The five-part series continues with its third panel: Housing in the City.

When: Monday, Feb. 24, 2020 at 7 p.m.
Where: Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper Street, Ottawa
Info: Registration is available online.

Media are invited to attend this event.

Panel experts include Catherine McKenney, councillor of Somerset Ward, Abra Adamo, adviser of Housing Policy and Research at Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Josh Hawley, PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Sociology Prof. Aaron Doyle will moderate the panel.

Panel members will discuss the importance of housing in the health of a city. First elected in 2014, McKenney is focused on improving life in Ottawa by supporting affordable housing and local businesses, improving transit and public spaces, building streets for pedestrians and protecting heritage. Adamo has more than 10 years of experience in urban planning, housing and homelessness policy, having worked in partnership with stakeholders to create and preserve affordable housing and more sustainable and inclusive neighbourhoods. Hawley’s research focuses on empowering tenants against systemic injustices. He has helped launch the Collective Justice Centre, which is dedicated to providing equitable access to justice through legal and community organizing services.
