“I am honored to join the Board and thankful for the trust of all colleagues across Canada,” said Bacon.

“As we continue to adapt to difficult circumstances, Universities Canada will play a crucial role in determining the best path forward for Canadian higher education, and I look forward to contributing to these discussions.”

Universities Canada’s governance and strategic direction is led by a 13-member board of directors – 12 university presidents and the president of the association, Paul Davidson. Meric Gertler, who heads the University of Toronto, begins his term today as vice-chair, serving with Sophie D’Amours, rector of Université Laval, who was appointed chair in 2019 and serves in that role until October 2021.

Bacon began his five-year mandate as president of Carleton University on July 1, 2018. He joined Carleton from Queen’s University, where he served as Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).
