David McKie

David McKie is an Ottawa-based, award-winning journalist who spent 26 years honing his skills at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as an investigative producer. In addition to teaching at Carleton, he is now the National Observer’s deputy managing editor.
David has co-authored three journalism textbooks and two user guides on freedom-of-information laws and privacy, respectively.
In addition to his teaching, he is a data-journalism trainer who has conducted workshops for the Canadian Association of Journalists, the U.S.-based National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, and the Canadian Association of Community Television Users and Stations. He also continues to offer data-journalism training to the CBC.

William Walters
Professor, Department of Political Science at Carleton University

Walters has published widely in the areas of political sociology, political geography, citizenship studies, security and insecurity, and Foucault studies. His research fields have been unemployment, the supranational governance of Europe, migration, and, most recently, secrecy. What links all of these areas is his interest in denaturalizing experiences and categories, and interrogating their relationship to different forms of politics.

Winn has expertise in political communication, public opinion and political culture. His books include Political Parties in Canada, Broadcasting Policy, and House of Commons Reform. As a public opinion researcher, Winn has provided strategic counsel to Canadian media chains, individual newspapers, federal departments and provincial governments, as well as government agencies in the United States and United Kingdom.
