Andrea Howard
Professor, Department of Psychology at Carleton University
Email: Andrea.Howard@carleton.ca
Howard studies well-being and health-related behaviours in adolescence and the transition to adulthood, with an emphasis on special challenges facing university students and young people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. A fundamental assumption behind her work is that all young people have the capacity to thrive.
This has led her to question the validity of popular but negative stories about youth that appear in the media and are embraced by the public but aren’t clearly supported by empirical research (the “kids these days” fallacy). This includes myths about the pervasiveness of helicopter parenting, rampant mental illness, and harmful impacts of smartphones and social media.

Holly Shannon
PhD candidate, Neuroscience Department at Carleton University
Email: HollyShannon@cmail.carleton.ca
Shannon’s research examines problematic social media use (PSMU) from a biopsychosocial perspective to understand whether it shares key features with other addictions. Her research investigates reward system functioning, inhibitory control and mental health outcomes associated with PSMU. Beyond identifying possible risk factors for PSMU, Shannon is interested in the broader public health implications of social media use. More recently, her research has explored how social media platform design and user behaviours influence mental health. Shannon is also passionate about science communication and public engagement. Through her Instagram platform, Carleton University Mindful Media Crew, she translates research findings into accessible, practical insights to help individuals better understand and navigate their social media use.
