The eighth annual Arthur Kroeger College Awards for Public Affairs recognized excellence in areas that contribute to the vibrancy of Canadian democracy and our society at a gala dinner in April. By focusing on public affairs activity, the awards showcase to all Canadians individual and collective effort in pursuit of the public good.

Selected by independent juries composed of prominent Canadians from the public, private and non-profit sectors, this year’s winners are: The Honourable Michael Kirby, chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, for policy leadership; Ernie Regehr, founder of Project Ploughshares, for ethics in public affairs; Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network and PLAN Institute for citizenship and community affairs; Peter Herrndorf, president and CEO of the National Arts Centre, for management; and the Walrus Foundation for public discourse.

Embodying the ideals the awards stand for, guest speaker Gail Asper, president of the Asper Foundation and director of CanWest Global Communications Corporation, talked about creating a new Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
