Project Summary

Clinician-patient communication is a cornerstone of effective healthcare. However, traditional screen setups can hinder shared decision-making, reduce engagement, and limit patient understanding. This project explores how large interactive displays can reshape clinical consultations by fostering a more collaborative, face-to-face interaction.

Through a mixed-methods study involving 18 participants, this research compared consultations using a PC screen, printouts, and a 55” interactive display that visualized fictional health data (sleep, activity, and sedentary behavior). While quantitative differences across formats were not statistically significant, qualitative feedback strongly favored the interactive display

Participants reported improved communication, increased control over their health data, and stronger engagement. The large display’s physical presence and intuitive touch interface encouraged shared exploration, leading to greater empowerment and rapport. Clinician feedback highlighted opportunities for better time navigation, tailored functionality, and usability enhancements through personalization and help features.

This work points to a future where tangible, user-centered technologies improve the consultation experience and support more meaningful patient involvement in care.
