Carleton University has had a Scholars at Risk Committee for over a decade now. We’re part of an international network of institutions, established in 2000, whose sole mission is to protect at-risk academics around the world, advocate for teachers, researchers, writers, artists and other intellectuals whose freedom is threatened anywhere, and to promote open discussion of threats to academic rights. Today Carleton’s SAR Committee is made up of two dozen faculty, staff, and students from across the university who provide institutional support to visiting at-risk scholars, who, in turn, enrich the Carleton community in countless ways. We also work tirelessly to raise awareness about global academic freedom, hosting guest talks, roundtables, exhibitions, and other events on campus.
