The Coordinated Accessibility Strategy (CAS) is a strategic framework that guides accessibility initiatives at Carleton. It is currently undergoing a renewal period. As we continue through this process, the CAS Renewal Working Group is seeking feedback on accessibility at Carleton to craft priorities and develop recommendations.
Feedback submitted as part of the CAS 2024-25 Consultation process will be made available on the Feedback Received webpage and will be updated on a regular basis. Feedback will be consolidated and will not include personal identifiable information.
Suggestions and feedback that may not be directly applicable to the strategy will be shared with the CAS Advisory Committee for review, with the goal of further enhancing the campus’s accessibility initiatives.
For context, there are seven areas of focus:
- 1. Coordination and Leadership
This area of focus aims to strengthen the effectiveness of accessibility initiatives, promote diverse representation, and sustain the institution’s reputation as a leader in accessibility. Achieving these objectives will support an inclusive, transparent, and responsive campus environment for all.
- 2. Education and Training
-
This area of focus refers to supporting knowledge and practical skills needed to foster accessible and inclusive teaching and learning environments. It involves raising awareness and building a foundational understanding of accessibility, disability, and inclusive practices for learners. This focus applies to academic programs, skills-based certification training, and professional development initiatives. By addressing these recommendations, the university can promote a more inclusive, supportive, and accessible society.
- 3. Information and Communication
-
This area of focus involves how we disseminate information, foster interaction, and build relationships. By achieving these goals, we can foster more inclusive communication environments, allowing all students, faculty, staff, and community members to fully engage in university activities.
- 4. Physical Campus
-
Carleton University is committed to reducing and ultimately eliminating accessibility barriers across its physical campus, ensuring that all students, faculty, staff, and visitors can access and navigate the campus with ease. In addition to addressing existing barriers, Carleton is focused on integrating accessibility into the design and development of future campus spaces and buildings. This includes a comprehensive approach to parking, washrooms, signage, and wayfinding systems, with the goal of providing an accessible and welcoming environment.
- 5. Employment and Employee Support
-
This area of focus aims to advance the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workplace by promoting greater representation, enhancing accessibility, and fostering a supportive environment for all employees. This includes ensuring that hiring practices are fully inclusive, accommodations are effectively coordinated, and employees with disabilities have equitable opportunities for growth and development within the university.
- 6. Student Support Services
-
This area of focus includes services across all university portfolios and the campus community. It aims to support the needs of students throughout their academic journey and in fostering their personal and professional growth. It includes accessible services and environments that help students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
- 7. Research and Development
-
This area of focus aims to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of research at Carleton University, with the goal of creating a supportive and equitable environment for all researchers. It also seeks to cultivate a thriving, inclusive research community that leads the way in accessibility and disability research.
