What is the collective bargaining process and how are agreements reached?

Collective bargaining is a process in which a union and an employer negotiate a collective agreement. A collective agreement is a written contract of employment covering a group of employees who are represented by the union. Most Canadian universities have collective agreements with their faculty and staff, and renewal of those agreements occurs on average every three to four years.
