Gale Franklin, PhD candidate, will be presenting on “Listening to Whiteness: Race, Space and Belonging on Parliament Hill”
From January 22nd to February 23rd, 2022, the so-called “Freedom Convoy” took up occupation of Ottawa. Drawing on testimony from the Ottawa People’s Commission inquiry into the occupation, this talk explores how sounded performances of whiteness were experienced as sonic violence, the function of whiteness in relation to music and sounds, as well as individual and collective listening practices on Parliament Hill. Gale Franklin is a PhD candidate in the School of Canadian Studies at Carleton.
