Canadian Studies in Turbulent Times: Challenges — Ideas — Opportunities

The School of Canadian Studies is excited to announce that our Annual Vickers-Verduyn Lecture will feature four notable Canadians engaged in a conversation and a sharing of ideas with Carleton’s Provost and Moderator, Pauline Rankin.

Adrian Harewood, Associate Professor School of Journalism and Communication	Adrian has been a journalist for over a quarter century. He was the host of CBC Ottawa’s drive home radio show All in a Day for 3 years, and then the anchor of CBC Ottawa News at Six for 13 years. In 2017 he was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Interviewer, and in 2020 he won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Local Anchor. For 7 years Adrian hosted the CBC weekly cultural magazine show Our Ottawa. Adrian joined Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2021. He completed a BA in Political Theory & History at McGill University and an M.A. in History at Carleton University.
Dr. Jane Philpott, Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Director of the School of Medicine, Queen’s University	She is a medical doctor, a Professor of Family Medicine, and former Member of Parliament. Prior to politics, Jane spent the first decade of her medical career in Niger, West Africa. From 2015 to 2019 she served as Canada’s Minister of Health, Minister of Indigenous Services, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government. She is currently the Chair of the Ontario Health Data Council and is a Commissioner to the Global Commission on Drug Policy.
Honourable Yuen Pau Woo, Senator	Senator Woo has worked on public policy issues related to Canada’s relations with Asian countries for more than 30 years. From 2005-2014, he was President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, during which he also served on the Standing Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and as Chair of PECC’s State of the Region Report. He is a Senior Fellow at Simon Fraser University’s Graduate School of Business, and a member of the Trilateral Commission. He also serves on the Advisory Boards of the Mosaic Institute and the Canadian Ditchley Foundation. Senator Woo is a joint chair of the Standing Joint Committee for the Scrutiny of Regulations and a member of the following Senate Standing Committees: Foreign Affairs and International Trade; and Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament.
Frank Graves, Founder and President EKOS Research Associates Inc.	Mr. Graves has directed hundreds of large-scale studies of Canadian attitudes to a vast array of issues during his 36-year career, including the economy, immigration, defense and security, health care, the environment, national unity, and Canada-U.S. relations. Mr. Graves graduated from Carleton University with a B.A. in Social Anthropology, M.A. in Sociology, and has completed doctoral coursework in Sociology.

We hope you’ll join us for an exciting evening of debate and discussion as our speakers explore key aspects of their work in the context of Canada’s changing demography, culture and policies. Our conversation takes place amidst the challenges universities face including declining international student enrolment; student well-being and mental health; the importance of inclusivity and diversity in University environments; the rise of populism; and shifting Canadian attitudes in the context of disruptive events both in Canada and elsewhere.
