Erica graduated from Carleton University where she received her MA in Public History, and a PhD in History from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has been involved in array of historical projects and research initiatives, including the Montreal Life Stories Project, the Y Archive Project at the Jewish Public Library in Montreal, the Douglas Cardinal Archive Project, and Hate 2.0: Combating Right-Wing Extremism in the Age of Social Technology. She is currently the Planning, Programming and Research Officer (APPR) at CIUSSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal.
Research
Erica’s MA research examined tourist reception and representation of the former concentration camp of Sachsenhausen through the videos visitors create and upload on the popular social media site of YouTube. By using the methodology of “dark tourism, ” the work of social media scholars, and the writings of Walter Benjamin. This research explored new ways in which tourists remember and discuss Holocaust memory in the 21st century.
