Background
The University of Chicago, in collaboration with the Ruhr-University Bochum / Germany, is pleased to announce a new, two-year project on “Enhancing Life,” supported with a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
Opportunity
The Enhancing Life Project:
- explores an essential aspiration of human beings that moves persons and communities into the future. Given the profound expansion of human power through technology as well as advances in genetics, ecology, and other fields, the vulnerability and endangerment as well as the enhancement of life are dominant themes in the global age;
- aims to explore this rich but widely unexamined dimension of human aspiration and social life, and increase knowledge so that life might be enriched.
The Project will support applications particularly but not exclusively in the following areas:
- Religious Thought/Theology/Philosophy
- Philosophy of Biology/of Science/of Technology
- Social Sciences (e.g., Anthropology/Law/ Political Science/Psychology/Sociology)
- Communications and Media Studies
The LOI requires a 3 page proposal, CV, application form, budget, budget narrative, and 2 letters of recommendation
Eligibility
Non-U.S. residents are eligible for all awards.
The 15 advanced career researchers must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent); be affiliated with an accredited college or university; have a second book publication (monograph), recent excellent publications, experience in interdisciplinary inquiries, and a proven track record of successfully carrying out ambitious research projects.
The 20 early career scholars must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent); be affiliated with an accredited college or university; previous and current research must show outstanding academic promise and whose dissertation (revised or unrevised) or first academic monograph is published, no more than eight years ago. The grant is intended to advance exceptional research beyond the PhD Dissertation.

- This 3-page Letter of Intent (LOI) (single-spaced, Times Roman 12-point font, 1-inch margins, in English) should describe the proposed project concretely and in detail and should indicate clearly why the proposed study promises significant contributions to inquiry into the enhancing of life. The LOI should include: (1) a title for the proposed project, (2) a description of the research planned, (3) an explanation of how the proposed project fits within this initiative, and (4) information on the project’s methodology and significance.
- applicants will also be required to fill out an online application form and upload a copy of their CV, a budget using the Budget Summary Template, and a budget narrative.
- Additionally, two letters of recommendation are required and will be uploaded by the recommenders. The online application requests the names and contact information for these recommenders. Note well: Letters of recommendation are linked to applications via the applicant’s email address; please make sure the email address given for the applicant on the application matches the email address given for the applicant on each of the letters of recommendation.
- Institutional signatures not required at LOI stage. The agency expects that you will discuss aspects of your LOI application with your institution as needed at this stage – the prospect of teaching two classes on the themes of The Enhancing Life Project, getting release time if you wish, etc. Institutional signatures are required at the full proposal application stage.
