The annual Applied Research Competition is the most competitive line of funding we offer. Researchers can apply for 1-2 year grants of up to $30,000. Since 2002, we have proudly contributed more than $3.5 million in grants to support over 200 autism pilot studies.

Our Scientific Council, augmented by highly qualified professionals from the autism community, select and fund the most promising research proposals through three rounds of review: pre-proposals, full proposals, and final selection. Our Board of Directors approves all grant awards based on the recommendations of the Scientific Council and established research priorities.

Opportunity

The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) awards funds for research studies through an annual, open grants competition. OAR realizes that there are some necessary costs that come with research studies that are categorized as “administrative.” Thus, OAR will allow up to 20 percent of a grant to be used for administrative costs.

Eligibility

While there are no eligibility requirements based on experience or degree, many of the finalists have doctoral degrees and previous experience conducting autism research.

International researchers are eligible to apply.

Applicants who are in transition between research institutions during the competition period but before the study period begins are still eligible to apply. In such cases, applicants must coordinate with the proper office of sponsored programs as needed, and briefly explain the pending status of IRB approval within the application.

Funding Available

OAR funds pilot studies that range from 1-2 years. Grant awards are capped at $30,000 regardless of study duration.
