International Research Seed Grant

• Clearly constructed motivation for new collaboration, with plan for funding application or co-publication within two years
• Alignment with the Strategic Integrated Plan and the International Strategic Plan
• Matching funds and/or in-kind contribution from the international partner(s)
• Feasible budget with notes on where funds might leverage other funding
• Potential to sustain partnership beyond the term of the award

All full-time faculty members of professional rank (Assistant, Associate, and Full) at Carleton are eligible to apply.

Applicants are ineligible if:

• hold a CU SSHRC Exchange – Knowledge Mobilization Grant; CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR): Multidisciplinary Research Catalyst Fund or a REALISE grant.
• were awarded an International Research Seed Grant in the past 3 years.

The award provides up to CAD$10,000. Depending on the number of applications received and availability of funds, projects may be partially funded.

Eligible expenses include travel and accommodations, stipends to research assistants, research and communication costs, and expenses associated with the development of funding proposals in collaboration with the international partner(s).

The IRSG does not cover ongoing operations, equipment and renovation costs, salaries of staff, administration of personnel costs of existing projects or initiatives, costs for initiatives that have alternative sources of funding, teaching release, and expenses on behalf of other Canadian universities.

The funding will be awarded for a two-year period.

The annual deadline for this competition is the Friday of the Winter Reading Week in February.

The deadline for submission of final application in cuResearch is: February 23, 2024 (4:00 pm)

1. Download the IRSG Application Form (2024). It is recommended that the form be filled out in Acrobat. Please also read through the IRSG Guidelines (2024).
2. Save the completed application form, CV, references (1 page max), and Letter from Partner (2 pages max) as a SINGLE pdf file, using the naming convention PIlastname.PIfirstname.IRSG.pdf.
3. Create a new project entry in the cuResearch portal. Login using your MyCarleton credentials:
   • Choose “Apply New” from the top right menu, then under A: Research Funding, select “Approval Form”
   • Project Info Tab: Enter your project title and SAVE
   • Project Sponsor Info Tab: click on “Add New”, then click on “Agency” and select: *Internal – Internal (Carleton) Grants/Awards, select appropriate Program from the drop down menu, and SAVE
   • Attachments Tab: Upload your completed application package
   • Approval Form Tab: Complete all required fields and SAVE

“SUBMIT” on or before the deadline day. (Your application will be routed for electronic approval by your Department Chair/School Director and Associate Dean, Research (ADR). To view the signing authority routing for your file, consult the “Approvals” tab.)

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

• Once your cuResearch entry arrives at Carleton International, it may not be changed or added to.

For grant recipients, Final Reports are required within 3 months following the end date of the grant, as stipulated in the IRSG Terms and Conditions. To submit the Final Report, please complete the online form here.
