The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) program funds student research mobility, whether for research towards a thesis project or as part of a faculty lead research project. It is an opportunity to build international research collaborations and enrich one’s academic experience through short-term (12-36 weeks) research visits. An application can include up to 5 students (undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral fellow) for travel to or from any eligible country.
This is an open call with no deadline, but please note that there are a limited number of awards available and the program will close once all units are awarded.
Carleton senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, are invited to apply. Applicants must find a supervisor at their intended host institution and work closely with their Carleton supervisor on the application form.
Carleton Faculty Applicants:
Carleton faculty members looking to build or strengthen international partnerships are encouraged to apply to either send or host an undergraduate or graduate student, or a postdoctoral fellow to/from abroad on a co-supervised research project. One application can be submitted for multiple interns (5 max). For inbound participants, recipients and hosts must follow the procedures for visiting researchers.
International Applicants:
Senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows from an eligible country, are welcome to apply. Applicants must first find a faculty member at Carleton to host them and supervise the research project during their visit. If successful, GRA award recipients must follow the procedures for visiting researchers.
The award provides CAD$6,000 for visits of 12-24 weeks or CAD$12,000 for visits of 24-36 weeks, to cover travel and accommodations or research expenses.
Carleton disburses payments for both inbound and outbound awards.
For Carleton award recipients, the funds will be administered by their home supervisor. To facilitate payment, the supervisor must submit and approval form in cuResearch. Please see this Mitacs GRA Payment Info Sheet (2025) on the GRA budget allocation and disbursement of funds.
For international visiting researchers, the funds will be administered by Carleton International upon arrival. The university will issue a cheque and the international award recipient must open a Canadian bank account.
Please contact the International Projects Coordinator and/or your local Mitacs Advisor to determine if your project fits the funding requirements for Carleton or an international partner and to request the link to the GRA Application Portal.
Once the application is complete, have the Mitacs advisor review the application before requesting signatures.
Once completed with signatures from the supervisor(s) and intern(s), the Mitacs advisor will download the PDF for institutional signatures and send to the International Projects Coordinator at Carleton to secure institutional approvals.
The applicant submits the application with all approvals to Mitacs through the GRA portal for final review (please note: the Mitacs review takes approximately 3 months)
Once approved by Mitacs, the award recipient receives a letter of approval and must submit two forms to Mitacs:
Acceptance of Award
Pre-departure Form
Following the submission of the required paperwork, Mitacs issues a Notice of Award and released the funds to Carleton.
The award recipient has one year to travel from the date of the letter of approval.
