An important factor in Canada’s aggregate labour productivity performance is the allocation of economic activity. Consequently, shifts in the allocations of hours worked and output can play an important role in the behaviour of aggregate productivity.

Hours Worked by Region

The above figure shows the total number of hours worked by region for 2022 represented in a pie chart. The four most populated provinces, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, represent a substantial share of Canada’s hours worked, roughly equal to 86%. The data is obtained from Statistics Canada Table 36-10-0480-01 and the industry disaggregation is at level 5.

Value Added by Region

The above figure reports nominal value added across provinces and territories for 2022 in a pie chart. Nominal value added has the advantage of being additive and summing to Canada’s nominal value added. Consistent with the hours worked figure, the four largest provinces account for a significant portion of Canada’s nominal value added.
