The Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) offers a variety of Learning and Writing Support Workshops to support students in developing their academic skills and strategies. These workshops provide students the opportunity to explore each topic at their own pace and are available on Brightspace throughout the entire year (September – August).

Writing Support Workshops

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to
- Recall the main reasons why academic integrity is so important.
- Identify an example of how the fundamental values of academic integrity can be demonstrated by Carleton community members.
- Apply knowledge of the 12 Academic Integrity Standards in Carleton’s Academic Integrity policy (2021) to a given situation.
- Break down information about paraphrasing and summarizing into parts and explore the patterns and relationships.
- Evaluate an academic integrity violation scenario and determine the most appropriate course of action.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Recall the main reasons why editing and proofreading academic writing is important.
- Identify the differences between the terms editing and proofreading.
- Apply knowledge of editing and proofreading strategies to a given situation.
- Analyze editing and and proofreading tools, and identify patterns and relationships that exist.
- Assess the relative importance of editing and proofreading in supporting a given conclusion.

- Recall the foundational elements found in an academic essay.
- Identify the best definition that describes a specific term used regularly in academic writing.
- Apply knowledge about common grammar errors in academic writing to a specific example.
- Analyze a part of an in-text citation to identify patterns and relationships.
- Evaluate a sample introductory paragraph and determine the best thesis statement that should be used.

- Recall key elements to consider when preparing to read academic texts.
- Identify an active reading strategy.
- Apply acquired knowledge on common elements found in an academic article to an active reading situation.
- Analyze a reading strategy and identify patterns and relationships.
- Evaluate the validity of using the SQ5R reading method.

- Understand the importance of facilitating presentations
- Identify the three phases of the presentation process
- Incorporate at least one strategy for making visually effective presentations

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Understand and define procrastination
- Identify some reasons as to why we procrastinate
- Identify some of the costs of procrastination
- Incorporate at least one strategy for preventing procrastination in your own life

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Recall the main functions of taking notes
- Identify various ways you can improve your note-taking skills
- Apply knowledge of at least three note-taking methods

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Identify key strategies for effective exam preparation.
2. Distinguish between effective and ineffective academic success strategies.
3. Describe appropriate actions to take at the start of an exam.
4. Apply a structured approach to answering different question types.
5. Reflect on returned tests to improve future performance. -
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Understand the importance of prioritization
- Identify how to prioritize tasks effectively
- Create and implement effective daily, weekly, and monthly plans
- Develop a plan to assess time management practices

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Describe why group work is important.
- Identify typical group work roles and ways to assign roles.
- Identify time management strategies and tools.
- Determine the differences between types of cross-cultural communication.
- Evaluate different styles of managing conflict style Thomas-Kilmann’s Conflict Model (1974).
