Practical Certificate in Defence Intelligence

Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Norman Paterson School of International Affairs – Professional Training & Development (NPSIA-PT&D), in cooperation with the Centre for Security, Intelligence, and Defence Studies (CSIDS)

This program is designed to provide participants with a general understanding of the defence intelligence function in Canada. It examines the defence intelligence role in government decision-making and provides practical knowledge of how defence intelligence practices are applied at the strategic and operational level, in all domains of warfare: maritime, land, aerospace, space and cyber, and most recently, human. This workshop explores defence intelligence within the broader concept of intelligence generally, within the overall Canadian intelligence enterprise and examines the defence intelligence relationship with other government intelligence functions and allied intelligence organizations.

This workshop will be of great value to those working in the public or private sector, in any area related to national security in the broadest sense. It will be of particular interest to those in any field associated with government planning for missions abroad, national defence and military mission planning, and defence or military procurement. It will also be of significant value to those in the early stages of pursuing a career in intelligence or national security.

Please note that this workshop will be conducted at the unclassified level. What you will learn:

  1. Gain an understanding of the role, structure and general practices of the overall Canadian
    Intelligence Enterprise, with a focus on the relationship between defence intelligence and other government intelligence functions;
  2. A broad understanding of the fundamental concept of intelligence and within that conceptual
    framework, an understanding of the defence intelligence role and mission and structure;
  3. Selected doctrinal practices at the strategic and operational levels; and
  4. The application of selected elements of defence intelligence doctrine in short exercise scenarios.
